Cam Newton Statue: Auburn Honors Heisman Winners, Is a Newton Statue a Bad Idea?

Cam Newton Statue Will Be Erected At Auburn, Will the Tigers Regret that Decision?

Cam Newton is just the latest in a trio of Heisman Trophy winners at Auburn.

When Newton won the award this past year, he joined Pat Sullivan and Bo Jackson as the only men to ever put on a Tigers uniform and win the Heisman.

In the afterglow of Newton's victory and Auburn's in the national title game, the school has decided to have statues erected of the three men.

Per Mike Szvetitz of OANow.com:

The bronze statues, which will weigh around 1,900 pounds and be 1 1/2 life size, will be placed on the east side of Jordan-Hare Stadium sometime during the 2011-2012 academic year.

According to Jacobs' letter, Ken Bjorge, a sculptor from Montana, began working on the statues of Sullivan and Jackson last spring. Newton, obviously, was added to the order after winning the award for the nation's best college player this past December.

With all that's happened with Newton over the past year involving the scandal about possible payments made to Cecil Newton, you'd think that the Tigers would want to lay low.

Throw in an HBO report about possible violations years ago at Auburn, and you really want to keep a low profile.

Nope, not Auburn. Although, if they really want to honor the man who helped turn Auburn into a national champion, they should erect a statue of Cecil.

If it comes out that Newton and the school committed violations during his recruitment, then the school loses everything. It loses the national championship, Newton loses the Heisman and the entire season is gone in a brilliant explosion of corruption.

At that point, they'll have to tear the statue of Newton down like he's a deposed dictator.

Like it or not, perception is reality, and the perception is that Auburn and Newton committed violations, especially after the HBO Real Sports report that couldn't have been a bigger black eye for a program that was already reeling.

Maybe down the line, this statue could have been done, but now, when the heat is on Auburn's football program, it's not a good look. Not in the least.
