WWE Raw Analysis: The Miz & R-Truth: Further Tag Team Development?

Hello folks! Last night’s Raw was once again above average, with a stellar main event featuring arguably the top two superstars in the company at the moment—John Cena and CM Punk.

However, their match is not what caught my attention last night. In fact, I found the Kevin Nash storyline a bit predictable and I also thought that Night of Champions would be made into a triple threat match.

The real superstars of the night for me were The Miz and R-Truth. I felt like I was watching a historic episode of Raw when they came out and cut a heelerific promo, directed at the crowd, and the superstars that are all in on the conspiracy...

I’ve said for months now that since R-Truth’s heel turn, he has become one of the best mic workers in the company—and last night he proved it. Every sentence was magic, and he had the crowd in the palm of his hand.

The problem with a lot of promos nowadays is the fact that the superstars stick strictly to the script, not responding to audience jeers, or anything else that may require a deviation from the regimented speech.

This results in extremely boring promos, with the crowd becoming more and more irritated that they are not being involved in the scene—their voices aren’t being heard.

What The Miz and R-Truth did last night was respond to the audience—showing their anger and baiting them to say something back to them. The audience loved this and were having a lot of fun.

Also, because they were engaged by Miz and R-Truth, the promo came alive and people actually listened to what the two men had to say. No-one switched off, or found their minds wandering, because the superstars responded to most of the chants and jeers being thrown at them.

Doing this not only makes for a more entertaining segment, but also allows them to get over a lot more as heels, as they are basically provoking the chants and jeers the audience loves to dish out.

This was one of the best promos I have seen in a long time and it seems Miz has learned something from Truth as well. He was a lot more engaging last night than he usually is.

What I am trying to express is that audience participation, most of the time, makes a promo a hell of a lot better. If the audience is bored, it makes it more likely that the television audience will be as well—but they can change the channel.

The other point I would like to address from this segment last night, is the possibility of a new heel tag team being formed.

We saw Kofi Kingston and Evan Bourne capture the WWE Tag Team titles last night, but they don’t really have any heel teams to feud with apart from the Divas of Doom—but as much as I would like to see them all the time, the scenario is not really feasible.

I believe that this segment was to establish the fact that the two lost heels will now be teaming up to grab opportunities and to fight those who conspire against them. Basically, they will be challenging for the tag team titles.

I just feel the pairing is so obvious—they are both main event stars who are in danger of being forgotten, the tag team division needs reviving and they aren’t doing anything else.

When thinking of a tag team division revival, I think of bringing in new teams and calling on old teams to try and revive it, but the answer is right under everybody’s nose.

Teaming up current superstars who have no purpose and are receiving little television time, allows the tag team division to survive before bringing in established talent such as Beer Money.

Not only that, but R-Truth and The Miz are pretty much a perfect fit and they are both heels, creating juxtaposition between them and the team of Kofi Kingston and Evan Bourne, who represent the faces.

If you ask me, WWE has done this just in time. Night of Champions requires every title to be on the line and if Raw hadn’t happened last night, the tag match at this PPV would have been pretty weak.

Now Night of Champions is looking up, as is the prestige of the tag titles that may become quite prominent in the future. They won’t return to full prominence overnight, but the teaming of Kofi Kingston and Evan Bourne, and the team of Miz and Truth, is the first step in a long road.

These two teams that were established last night may just hold the key to bringing prominence and prestige back to the WWE tag team division.

What do you think? Did you think the promo was up to standard? Do you agree that Truth and Miz will now be in the hunt for the WWE Tag Team Championships?

Please leave a comment below detailing your thoughts. I always try and respond to everyone who takes the time and effort to give their two pennies worth on my articles.
