Chargers vs Cowboys: Rob Ryan Defense Must Shut Down Explosive San Diego Attack

The San Diego Chargers look to continue their dominance in the preseason against the Dallas Cowboys tonight.

Being the first nationally network-televised preseason game of the year, quite a few eyeballs will be fixed on these two teams battling it out for most of the first half before the scrubs come in.

The Chargers played their first-team offense just one series when they opened the preseason against the Seahawks and the Cowboys defense did not play much longer against the Broncos.

This week, both sets of starters should be out on the field for nearly the entire first half. The Cowboys first team unit struggled last season to contain the Broncos? attack. They gave up gains of 4, 6, 5, 12 and 7 on the ground and a 29-yard completion in the first series.

The Chargers offense will certainly give them problems tonight if they struggled against the Broncos. Phillip Rivers went a crisp 5-6 for 87 yards and a TD while Vincent Jackson hauled in 2 of those for 54 yards.

The Cowboys have much more to worry about than the Chargers going into this game. They had a terrible season last year, marred by injury especially to starting QB Tony Romo, and need to prove that their team is ready to compete again in the NFC East.

Having their defense look sharp and communicative against the explosive San Diego Chargers offense, No. 1 overall last season, will help to alleviate fears that the team is simply not ready yet.

Rob Ryan is the new defensive coordinator in Dallas and was brought in this season to fix the 31st overall unit who has plenty of talent. If anyone can get it done, it is Ryan, a boisterous defensive genius.

He needs to prove that he worked the kinks out that he experienced last week in Denver and really bring it for two quarters against the Chargers.
