The New York Jets put on a show today against the Kansas City Chiefs. The final score was a blowout: 37-10. Behind amazing performances by Mark Sanchez, Shonn Greene and LaDainian Tomlinson, the New York Jets had no problem vanquishing the 5-7 Chiefs.
The Chiefs have struggled as of late. With their starting quarterback out with an injury, their offense has been nothing to write home about. They are currently ranked as one of the worst offensive teams in the league in almost all categories. Their saving grace was their rushing offense powered by Jamal Charles. But it ran into a snag when Charles was injured early in the season. Still, the Chiefs have managed to rank ninth in total rushing yards per game with 120.7. The fact that the Chiefs' saving grace is their run game shows why this match up is terrible for them: the Jets pride themselves in stopping the run.
This article is not about the Jets' win today. The Jets needed to win today against a struggling the Chiefs. What is important today was the level of play brought upon by Sanchez and the Jets' offense.
With a 61 percent completion percentage, Sanchez managed to limit himself to a single turnovers and turn in the kind of game the Jets need from him every Sunday: a consistent one. He was a leader on the field, pushing the offense down five times for 35 points. He also brilliantly used his youth and athleticism to punch it in twice for two scores. Sanchez showed today that he is ready for the playoffs. He has honed himself and has shown personal discipline today that New York needs from him day in and day out.
Greene, just like Sanchez, showed today he was ready for the playoffs. He hit a career-high in total offensive yards, with 129 rushing yards and 58 receiving yards. His average of 5.3 yards per carry showed that he is ready to be the Jets' every-down back. His performance in recent games have been mixed; but with a strong showing today against an easy Kansas City rushing defense, he showed that he a mature, talented individual who is ready to be the Jets' workhorse.
One of the biggest problems for the New York Jets as a team coming into the game was gaining yards. Specifically, the Jets were putting up points but ranked near the bottom in total yards per game in the league. They missed many potential scoring drives by being unable to take the ball down the field. While they have been mostly able to capitalize on good field position gained to them by the defense, they have been unable to take advantage of bad field position like many elite teams could.
Today, they showed they were able. With the New York Jets' average being around 310 yards per game (26th), they could have shattered it, putting up 278 yards in three quarters alone. If not for the entire fourth quarter, they could have put up 370 yards of total offense (with their average being 92 yards per quarter). They ended the day with 314 yards.
While the Jets made their mistakes on offense and defense, they managed to limit them, showing they are working hard to be more disciplined on both sides of the ball. The best teams win confidently when playing bad teams, and the Jets showed why they are one of the best, against Kansas City.
