Tuesday’s Three Stars: Duchene, LaRose spark comebacks

No. 1 Star:Matt Duchene, Colorado Avalanche

Down 3-1 in the third period, Duchene lead the Colorado comeback with a pair of goals and Milan Hejduk scored the only goal in the shootout to defeat the Columbus Blue Jackets 5-4. Daniel Winnik's goal with four seconds left forced overtime as the Avs snapped a nine-game losing streak at Pepsi Center and have now won two in a row.

No. 2 Star: Chad LaRose, Carolina Hurricanes

The Hurricanes fought back from a 2-0 deficit behind LaRose's pair of goals and Cam Ward's 36 saves to a 4-3 win over the Ottawa Senators. Twenty-five seconds after Tuomo Ruutu opened the scoring for Carolina, LaRose tallied his first and would add his second to give the 'Canes the lead late in the second period.

No. 3 Star: James Reimer, Toronto Maple Leafs

Toronto's rookie netminder continued his fantastic run with a 3-0 blanking of the Minnesota Wild. Reimer made 29 saves for his third shutout of the year and won for the fourth time in five games. The win also improved Reimer's recent road record to 7-0-1.

Honorable mention: Hejduk, Lightning defenseman Mattias Ohlund and Columbus forward Ethan Moreau all played in their 900th NHL games ... After going down 1-0 early, the Islanders scored four straight goals en route to a 5-2 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning. Al Montoya made 36 saves for his eighth win and Michael Grabner scored his 31st goal of the season ... The New York Rangers won their fifth in a row after Henrik Lundqvist recorded his NHL-best 10th shutout with a 1-0 victory over the Florida Panthers. Brandon Dubinsky's 22nd goal was the lone tally of the game ... After blowing a 3-0 lead, the Capitals recovered to force a shootout, and thanks to Alexander Semin's winner, escaped with a 5-4 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers. Mike Knuble had a goal and two assists and in the shootout, Matt Hendricks showed what kind of hands he has:

Ryan Miller earned his fourth shutout of the season with a 31-save effort and Nathan Gerbe scored twice as Buffalo upended Montreal 2-0 ... Pekka Rinne continued his march towards a Vezina Trophy nomination with 19 saves during a 3-1 win over the Edmonton Oilers. Rinne has now won five of his last six starts for Nashville ... Zdeno Chara passed the 400-point plateau with a three-point night as Boston downed New Jersey 4-1. Tim Thomas made 30 saves and Milan Lucci scored his 30th goal ... Lauri Korpikoski's 18th goal of the season broke a 1-1 tie as Phoenix slipped by St. Louis 2-1. Ilya Bryzgalov stopped 29 shots and Radim Vrbata assisted on both Coyotes goals.

Did you know? With two shorties tonight, the Islanders now lead the NHL with 13 shorthanded goals.

Dishonorable mention: Of Tomas Vokoun's last 20 losses, 15 of them have been decided by one goal ... New Jersey is 1-3 since ripping off a 23-3-2 run to put them in the Eastern Conference playoff race. The loss to the Bruins drops them to nine points behind the eighth seed Sabres ... Minnesota has been outscored 31-9 during their current seven-game losing streak.
