2011 NHL Draft: Which Teams Had the Worst First Round Picks of 2011 NHL Draft?

2011 NHL Draft has Teams Taking High Risk First Round Prospects

The dust is beginning to settle on the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. All seven rounds are now over and teams are evaluating what to do with their prospects and seeing where they are at after all the trades have been made. Some teams, like the New Jersey Devils and Boston Bruins, made some absolutely amazing picks and should have future first-line players out of their first round selections. Other teams made some less sound decisions and took players who are either high risk, questionable fits, or simply do not have as high of ceilings compared to some of the other prospects who were available. Lets take a look at some of those teams and players below.

The Coyotes made a very risky first round pick, taking a big chance on Connor Murphy with the No. 20 pick. Murphy is coming off threatening back and neck injuries which made him too much of a gamble for many teams. If he does pan out, the big defenseman could be a potential first-liner for the team. The rigor of an NHL schedule and hits from some of the bigger, stronger, more punishing players in the league could also be his downfall.

The Rangers took a chance on Jonathan Miller, an American center, who has been one of the more inconsistent players at the junior level. He has top ten talent, but he often makes some dumb decisions that land him on the bench. If he can ever pull it all together he may be a good choice here, but the Rangers are not known for developing their first rounders.

The Vancouver Canucks did little to address their need for toughness by selecting Nicklas Jensen. Jensen is going to be another finesse winger that the ?Nucks seem to have plenty of already. They needed to get a physical presence who isn?t afraid to take on anybody and finish checks. After seeing the Sedin brothers bullied around by the Bruins in the Stanley Cup Finals, they should have added a tougher player.
