Let's say you're an AHL player who just had his stick slashed out of his hands in front of a referee, yet received no call. The reasonable reaction might be to vociferously protest the non-call, perhaps with the benefit of colorful language.
The Jesse Boulerice reaction, in the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins' game at Charlotte on Jan. 5? Kicking the puck at the official and then softly checking him into the boards.
The result? A 10-game suspension from the AHL handed down on Friday.
Take a gander at Boulerice's official indiscretion with referee Francis Charron:
From the AHL:
Boulerice was suspended under the provisions of AHL Rule 28.1 (supplementary discipline) after review of an incident in the third period of Wednesday's game. Boulerice was determined to have deliberately applied physical force to an official without intent to injure, which carries a 10-game suspension under AHL Rule 40.3.
Boulerice has spent time in the NHL with the Philadelphia Flyers, Carolina Hurricanes, St. Louis Blues and Edmonton Oilers before joining the Pittsburgh Penguins organization in 2009-10. Besides getting 1-punched by Aaron Downey, he's most famous for some epic suspensions. From Carolina Hurricanes blog Red And Black Hockey:
Add this to a long list of stupid plays and senseless violence exhibited in his sorry career. He was once banned for an entire season from the Ontario Hockey League after a stick-swinging incident. He was suspended for 25 NHL games when he brutally cross-checked Ryan Kesler in 2007. Now he's proving that he can get himself suspended at any level.
Well, it's always good to set professional goals, right? Next stop, KHL?
