There are sights you expect to see after a Toronto Maple Leafs victory and sights you don't expect to see. We'd file Francois Beauchemin appearing to hand a wad of cash to coach Ron Wilson as they walked back to the dressing room at the Shark Tank under "unexpected."
More than a few viewers that stayed up for the Leafs' 4-2 win at the San Jose Shark Tuesday night saw the same thing on Sportsnet. Maybe we've finally discovered the reason why Wilson keeps giving Beauchemin that ice time. Or maybe it was part of Wilson's bounty for win No. 600, against his former team.
It is a hockey tradition that a player who goes to a new team pins money on the board when he plays his old team -- a bounty on their heads, as it were. The guy who gets the winning goal gets the cash. Well, Leafs coach Ron Wilson borrowed that tradition.
No one would say how much money Wilson posted, but given he was going after win No. 600 against the team that fired him in 2008, then maybe $600 was up for grabs. Probably more.
It was Carl Gunnarsson, scoring the winner in Toronto's 4-2 win over the Sharks, who gave Wilson got his coveted milestone win.
Gunnarsson told Eat Sleep Leafs on the 640am site that the entire team will share the bounty: "It's always dinner, great food and a bunch of water." Well done.
