Brett Favre wouldn't be caught dead in a sarong and David Beckham has probably never worn a pair of mud-splattered Wrangler jeans. Other than that, the two aging, grizzled athletes have quite a bit in common. Most of the similarities revolve around their strange, self-defeating determination to tarnish their own legacies.
Beckham and Favre are grown, very famous and accomplished sportsmen (and husbands/fathers) who know how the game is played.
Yet, whether it was a salacious text message to a notable TV bimbo or a confrontation with a fan over an alleged dalliance with a $10,000-a-night prostitute, they've recently been making news for all the wrong reasons.
On top of that, each has exhibited both a stubborn refusal to recognize his own limitations and an apparent lack of loyalty and gratitude to his core fanbase. Those who used to revere them have grown fatigued, ambivalent or angry. Sadly, that erosion of interest and affection hasn't helped either of them refocus on the big picture.
