Fight Video: NCAA benches clear between North Dakota, Minnesota

In the NHL, we're used to seeing fights after clean hits. The North Dakota Fighting Sioux and the Minnesota Gophers upped the ante last night in an NCAA game, as a clean (and quite impressive) hit by Brad Malone on Gophers defenseman Kevin Wehrs at the end of the second period led to a rarity for college hockey: a benches-clearing brawl.

OK, as much as a "brawl" two teams wearing face cages can have. Most of it looking like ice wrestling. The penalties, featuring a few NHL prospects:

  • 2nd  Nick Bjugstad (Florida Panthers)   MINN   2  ROUGHING  20:00
  • 2nd  Brad Malone   UND   2  ROUGHING  20:00
  • 2nd  Nick Bjugstad   MINN   2  UNSPORTSMANLIKE CONDUCT  20:00
  • 2nd  Brad Malone (Colorado Avalanche)   UND   2  UNSPORTSMANLIKE CONDUCT  20:00
  • 2nd  Nate Condon   MINN   2  ROUGHING  20:00
  • 2nd  Danny Kristo (Montreal Canadiens)   UND   2  ROUGHING  20:00
  • 2nd  Nate Condon   MINN   2  UNSPORTSMANLIKE CONDUCT  20:00
  • 2nd  Danny Kristo   UND   2  UNSPORTSMANLIKE CONDUCT  20:00
  • 2nd  Jake Hansen (Columbus Blue Jackets)  MINN   2  ROUGHING  20:00
  • 2nd  Derek Forbort (Los Angeles Kings)  UND   2  ROUGHING  20:00
  • 2nd  Jake Hansen MINN   2  UNSPORTSMANLIKE CONDUCT  20:00
  • 2nd  Derek Forbort   UND   2  UNSPORTSMANLIKE CONDUCT  20:00

Interesting result from these penalties: Nico Sacchetti of the Gophers, a player who's not among their leaders in power-play time, scored the game winner because so many players were in the box. From the Star Tribune:

"There was a big scrum at the end of the second period, so a lot of guys were in the box for us," Sacchetti said.

Eight total, four per side, most sitting four minutes, and that played havoc with the Gophers' line combinations. "I don't normally play power play," Sacchetti said. "I just kind of got tossed out there. I was lucky enough -- [defenseman Aaron] Ness took a shot from the point. I was on my off hand, [but] the goalie kicked it right to me. The whole top of the net was open."

Minnesota won, 3-2, to snap UND's nine-game unbeaten streak.
