Oh yeah: Buffalo Sabres forward Ville Leino was suspended one game for an elbow to the head of Matt Read of the Philadelphia Flyers. Here's why:
This incident happened in the Flyers' 5-4 overtime win against the Sabres on Wednesday, as Leino chicken-winged Read and earned himself a phone hearing. From Shanahan, the reasoning behind the 1-game suspension, which will cost Leino $24,324.32:
"Even though we view this not as an intentional check, but as one player stealing the puck from another player, the fact remains that Leino's elbow recklessly makes Read's head the principle point of contact."
Again, this is why we dig these videos: If the case for it only being a one-game suspension is that it (a) wasn't an attempt by Leino to take off Read's head and (b) was a play that didn't result in an injury and (c) was an incident involving a player with no priors, then that makes sense ? as bad as the play looked in real time.
Speaking of plays that looked bad in real time: Marc-Andre Bourdon played 13:46 in the Flyers' 3-2 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday night, which means he wasn't suspended for this hit on Nathan Gerbe.
Maybe they felt Gerbe's glance at an onrushing Bourdon meant he was turning his back to the hit. In any event, Gerbe suffered a concussion in that game. Poor Honey Badger ?
