NEW YORK -- Ah, to be Alex Ovechkin. To star for the Washington Capitals. To sign a new endorsement deal with Nike. To come to an NHL media and marketing event.
To tweet your whereabouts and watch the teenage girls come running -- even if they're wearing Rangers jerseys.
"Shopping at #NIKETOWN NYC come visit!! Ahahahaha!!"
Careful what you ask for, Ovi.
Here was Ovechkin on Thursday night, ordering some shoes, picking up bags full of clothes, telling a reporter how he was so proud to sport the Swoosh alongside superstars like Jordan and Jeter and James.
"When I was a little kid, I buy Jordan," said Ovechkin, who endorsed Reebok until recently. "But last year, I can't wear it, because I have a contract with a different company. So right now I'm here, and I'm pretty happy."
And right then up ran Marvi Sajid, 16, and Lauren Szigetvari, 15. Both were wearing Blueshirts. Isn't that the team Ovi's Caps just beat in the playoffs?
"It's hard to explain," Szigetvari said. "We really like the Caps. I'm a big fan of Nicklas Backstrom. She's a little Ovi obsessed."
They were at the NHL store waiting to see some Rangers when they saw Ovechkin's tweet. Sajid has Ovechkin wallpaper on her BlackBerry. They bolted up Sixth Avenue to 57th Street, found Niketownbetween Fifth and Madison, found Ovi up on the fifth floor and snagged a picture with him.
"We ran 10 blocks," Sajid said.
"We ran 10 blocks, and we're like, 'Where is it?' " Szigetvari said. "And some ladies told us, 'Go that way,' so we did."
"But Ovechkin is worth it," Sajid said. "Rangers are my first team, but Ovechkin is my No. 1 player."
Ahahahaha!!
