Strikeforce Grand Prix Results: Alexis Davis vs. Amanda Nunes

Strikeforce Grand Prix: Alexis Davis vs. Amanda Nunes was my first experience with female MMA and I have to admit, it didn?t disappoint. I was worried that this fight would be more spectacle than anything; the silly caveman in me pictured a lot of hair pulling and name calling.

Alexis Davis enters to AC/DC. She?s won three of her last four. This is a clash of styles, as Alexis hopes to submit Nunes, while Nunes wants to end this thing with strikes.

Amanda Nunes enters to the "Rocky" theme song.  She?s won six fights in a row, all by KO, the last one in 14 seconds.  She looks angry. I am glad I am not fighting her.

Round 1- Nunes came out with a flurry in round 1 which Davis weathered.  Most of the round took place in the clinch and Davis was able to land some nice punches and kept coming forward.  This was a very close round that probably went to Nunes because she was the more aggressive of the two.  Nunes looked a little tired at the end of the round.

Round 2- Davis closed the distance early and put Nunes against the fence. Davis frustrated the striker with her clinch and landed some nice knees in the process.  Both fighters were starting to tire; Nunes was unable to create space to unleash her hands.

Nunes scored a takedown which was quickly reversed by Davis who ended up in full mount. She took Nunes? back and started pummeling her with strikes. The ref stepped in and stopped the fight giving Davis the win by TKO.  Not a surprise that Davis won, but it is surprising that she did it with strikes.

Female MMA has a long way to go but this was an entertaining fight.

Official Result: Davis wins by TKO in the second round.
