Prince Fielder, are you kidding me?
The Brewers are hot right now, and they are ready to make a postseason run. Perhaps a World Series run.
While things are going good, someone asked Fielder about his position for this upcoming offseason.
Fielder just had to be honest, though. His honesty this time around may have a huge toll on his faith and the Brewer's club house.
Recently, Fielder told the media that this would likely be his last season in Milwaukee.
By making this claim, Fielder is already walking away from his club. Or was Fielder making this claim to get the Brewers to cough up some big money? (I doubt that, though.)
I have no idea why in the world Fielder would ever make these claims. The Brewers are on top of the world right now. Yes, I know they just dropped five games in a row, but the Brewers should have no trouble holding off the Reds, Cubs, Marlins and Pirates. Making this claim sets up Fielder for a lot of negative criticism.
For one, his team is not going to be happy he has made this claim before the season has even ended. The Brewers have been playing extremely well this season, and the last thing they would need is question marks for the future.
Fielder has been one of the cornerstones to the Brewers building process. Now that they are finally on top of the NL Central and knocking at the door of the Phillies, he has taken all the air out of the Brewers' locker room.
I understand Fielder is an honest guy, but come on, you just say, "We will see what happens, but things are going great here right now."
Even after all the crap LeBron James got for the handling of his situation, he at least did the part of staying positive about his current situation while playing in Cleveland. Fielder just went right ahead and basically made it clear that his intentions are to leave Milwaukee following the season.
Speaking of James, this is where Fielder is going to hurt his reputation most. If Fielder doesn't play to his "abilitiy" come this postseason, people are going to claim he checked out.
This could bring down Fielder's value. It certainly will bring reason for Milwaukee fans to send him packing, but he has risked tainting his reputation.
I don't think Fielder is going to check out, but baseball is so spotty that he could hit a cold streak. If he does, this is surely going to be an issue that will be brought to attention.
I understand that Fielder wants big money, and perhaps there is more going on between him and the Brewers than we know, but he should not put them out of contention for his services so quick.
If the Brewers win the World Series, Fielder will look like an idiot if he goes back. He has created all this unnecessary drama just before the most important part of the year, and he has no idea what is even going to happen during free agency.
Fielder has made things worse not just for him, but for his current teammates and Milwaukee Brewers' fans.
People expect Fielder and Albert Pujols to test their value this offseason, but at least Pujols is smart and is not making claims that he has already checked out of St. Louis like Fielder has with Milwaukee.
It is going to be interesting to see what happens with Prince Fielder and the result this will have on the Brewers down the stretch. Milwaukee fans can only hope this will not change anything—well, besides convincing their All-Star first baseman to stay for awhile longer.
