This is getting ridiculous.
I think most people expected the Texans to take down the Colts after news of Peyton Manning’s neck injury broke, but the game has turned into a blowout. At the end of the first half, Houston leads 34-0, thanks to a 79-yard punt return touchdown by Jacoby Jones.
Jones set the new franchise record with his fourth career special teams touchdown on this play. I actually thought he was going to get knocked out of bounds at the end of the run, but a fancy balancing act kept him on the green and allowed him to gallop into the end zone. I’m not sure it would have mattered much with the way the Houston offense is dismantling the Colts’ defense.
It was already a thrashing, but the return TD makes it 34-0 Texans at halftime. They had the ball for the majority of the half, and I’d imagine the Colts are pretty tired—and certainly disappointed. This will be an interesting moment for coach Jim Caldwell. He’s always had Peyton Manning on the field, doing plenty of coaching and making Caldwell’s life easier.
Caldwell is a very calm coach, but this has to be too much for him. I’m interested to see if he will say the right things at halftime and make the proper personnel changes to give the Colts a chance to score, let alone be competitive against this upstart Texans D.
They have the weapons and an established veteran QB, but again it’s a team effort. The Colts defense needs to do their part even if they are wiped out by now. If they don’t stop Matt Schaub and Andre Johnson, any amount of points they score will only hold fantasy value.
