Dallas Mavericks Trade Rumors: Devin Harris "Likely" To Return to Town

According to Marc Stein from ESPN, Devin Harris will likely be traded to Dallas or Portland.  Both teams are interested in Harris and can offer pieces the Nets might be interested in.

Portland has been trying to acquire Harris in a trade involving their own point guard, Andre Miller.  Also, Greg Oden or Joel Przybilla might be included in the deal in some way.  Although Harris is a former all-star and young player, it is hard to imagine if the change would be something the team could benefit from quickly.  LaMarcus Aldridge has blossomed this season next to Miller, and they currently hold the fifth spot in the packed Western Conference.  The leadership Miller brings to the table might be just what the team needs to stay afloat, regardless of his age.

The Dallas Mavericks present a whole different story.  A deal for Devin Harris would most likely not involve a current starter.  Having Harris back in Dallas is more of a move into the future of the franchise rather than a move for a playoff push this year.  A combination of J.J. Barea, Caron Butler’s expiring contract, DeShawn Stevenson’s expiring contract, and perhaps, Ian Mahinmi might be a package that the Nets might give a strong look.  Also, draft picks could also be thrown in.

Recently, Nets reporter Al Iannazzone tweeted that, “In all likelihood, Devin Harris will be traded to Dallas.”  This at least means conversations have gone to at least semi-serious status.  Also, it has surfaced that Devin Harris is in all support for a move out of New Jersey and returning to Dallas would be his preference.

It seems like all the dominoes are in place to make this happen.  At the end of the day, it is a trade that would benefit both teams.  If the Nets are able to convince Dallas to send a few expiring contracts as well as young talent like J.J. Barea or Ian Mahinmi, it would be a win-win situation.

The Nets would be able to receive a backup point guard to play next to Jordan Farmar in Barea, as well as a backup big man able to give Brooke Lopez a rest in Mahinmi.  The Mavericks, on the other hand, get their point guard of the future (and the past).  Although that is supposed to be Beaubois, it is looking more likely that the young Frenchman is better suited as a combo scoring guard.  Between now and then, Jason Kidd could keep running the point and serving as a mentor for both players.

This kind of trade is not strictly necessary, but it could be something that could put Dallas even more ahead in the Western Conference.  Stay tuned for the outcomes of these rumors!  In the meanwhile, commence the discussion in the comments section below.
