Mauricio "Shogun" Rua and Jon "Bones" Jones are set to meet at UFC 128 on March 19th at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. At stake will be Rua's UFC light heavyweight title. Recently, video was discovered of Jones' first professional mixed martial arts fight. Now it seems that the good people at Black House MMA have decided to return the favor and post video of an early fight of Rua's.
The video was posted on Black House's official YouTube channel, and it features Rua in action against Evangelista "Cyborg" Santos in 2003.
The fight took place at Meca World Vale Tudo 9 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. At the time of the fight Rua was 2-0, while Santos was 7-3.
The fight starts off as a pretty wild slugfest which then goes to the ground. Once there, Rua sinks in an armbar, which Santos breaks free from with some heavy hands to the face of Rua.
Rua then ends up in Santos' guard and tees off with some nice punches of his own. Rua then sinks in a choke that he transitions from into full mount, and from there he lands some heavy hands. The punches do not seem to be doing the trick, so he transitions that into an armbar that Santos is able to roll out of.
The fighters briefly stand and when they hit the ground again, Rua sinks in a pretty rough looking kneebar that Santos manages to avoid tapping to. From there he moves from side guard into full mount, and ends the fight with a barrage of strikes to the head of the exhausted Santos.
This fight was a dominating performance from the young "Shogun."
