Friday’s Three Stars: Kopitar’s trick; OT drama for Wings, Devils

No. 1 Star: Anze Kopitar, Los Angeles Kings

Kopitar scored the first three goals for the Kings -- two in the first, one in the second -- as Los Angeles defeated the Columbus Blue Jackets, 4-2. Kopitar has eight goals and five assists in a nine-game points streak vs. Columbus. Jonathan Bernier made 32 saves; Scottie Upshall and Derick Brassard scored for the Jackets.

No. 2 Star: Travis Zajac, New Jersey Devils

The Devils center cashed in on a 5-on-3 power play and then on a 4-on-3 power play in overtime, giving New Jersey a 3-2 win at the Atlanta Thrashers. The Devils moved to within eight points of the No. 8 seed, winning their fifth in six games. Ilya Kovalchuk had the game-tying goal in the third. Dustin Byfuglien scored his 20th in the loss.

No. 3 Star: Curtis McElhinney, Ottawa Senators

After the Dan Ellis trade, McElhinney was a Tampa Bay Lightning player for about a minute this season, saying, "I was on a plane right away after one skate." He was claimed on waivers by the Senators on Feb. 28. In his debut for Ottawa, he made 34 saves to beat the Lightning, 2-1, including 19 saves in the third period. Jason Spezza and Bobby Butler had the goals.

Honorable mention: Tremendous rally for the New York Islanders in their 4-2 win over the Boston Bruins. Matt Moulson scored a power-play goal with 2 seconds left in the second period to cut the lead in half; Michael Grabner, Jack Hillen and P.A. Parenteau scored in the third period. … Kari Lehtonen made only 14 saves in a 4-0 shutout win over the Minnesota Wild. Jamie Benn scored an awesome goal in the first, and then the Stars tallied three goals in under 2 minutes in the second to put the game away. … Ryan Getzlaf scored a goal and had two assists in the Anaheim Ducks' 6-2 victory over the Colorado Avalanche. Corey Perry scored his 34th and Bobby Ryan his 32nd. … In the third period of a 1-1 game, Washington Capitals forward Matt Hendricks blocked a shot to help spring Jason Arnott on a breakaway. Cam Ward (24 saves) made a spectacular stop on Arnott … but his defense didn't lay a finger on Hendricks as he trailed the play and scored the game-winner. Alex Ovechkin notched goal No. 28 in the 2-1 victory, as Braden Holtby made 40 saves. … Finally, Pavel Datsyuk had the primary helper on Nicklas Lidstrom's tying goal with 25 seconds left in regulation and then scored this impressive tally to win it in overtime against Devan Dubnyk, who made 42 saves in the loss. The Detroit Red Wings beat the Edmonton Oilers, 2-1.

Did you know? The Devils held an opponent scoreless in the first period to extend their modern-day NHL record to 15 straight games. They have played eight consecutive 0-0 first periods. (AP)

Dishonorable mention: Brian Elliott surrendered all six Ducks goals. … The Avalanche have lost 17 of 18 games. … Milan Hejduk was a minus-3 for the Avs. … A quick whistle may have cost the Carolina Hurricanes a game-tying goal last in the third period. Said Coach Paul Maurice: ""He had his whistle in his mouth before the puck even got close to his glove. … It's pretty costly." … Finally, there were some tense moments when Kings defenseman Drew Doughty was checked by Blue Jackets forward R.J. Umberger in the stanchion near the Columbus bench. He left for the dressing room, but would return soon after. "He obviously didn't mean to do it," said Doughty.
