NFL Draft 2011 Will Give Wade Phillips a Chance to Have Some Say
Obviously bringing in new defensive coordinator Wade Phillips changes things in Houston. What was a traditional 4-3 team is making the change to a 3-4 and that means bringing in different types of players to play defense while drafting this year.
One possible thought is that because the Texans struggled so much this year and because Philips has a lot of head coaching experience that the ownership of the Texans could be looking for the former Dallas Cowboys coach to take over the reigns from Gary Kubiak if they struggle again this year.
However, according to ESPN?s AFC South blogger Paul Kuharsky, despite the changing defense Kubiak will have final say for all the draft decisions.
?General manager Rick Smith runs the large scouting staff and the draft operation and works to build consensus. But the Texans are not drafting anyone coach Gary Kubiak doesn?t want, and Kubiak will lean heavily on defensive coordinator Wade Phillips and the new members of the defensive staff. They?ve taken a lot of fire for last year?s first-rounder. Cornerback Kareem Jackson struggled as he started all year.?
