Alabama Football: Which Quarterback Shined in the Crimson Tide's Spring Game?

A.J. McCarron and Phillip Sims Have Alabama Offense In Good Hands After A-Day Game

Alabama?s quarterback battle stayed neck-and-neck in Saturday?s spring game, as sophomore A.J. McCarron and redshirt freshman Phillip Sims put up virtually identical numbers while shuttling between the first- and second-unit offenses.

The good news for ?Bama fans is that whoever comes out on top, the Tide should have a solid starting QB in 2011. McCarron connected on 21 of 38 passes for 222 yards and a TD on Saturday, while Sims totaled 229 yards on 19-for-38 passing.

Alabama?s veteran defense showed up for the scrimmage as well, with each QB throwing one interception despite the fact that three Tide safeties (including senior star Mark Barron) played while recovering from injuries.

Still, CBS Sports reports that junior linebacker Dont?a Hightower was frustrated with his unit?s performance. ?I feel like our tackling needs to be a little better,? Hightower noted, making particular reference to standout RB Trent Richardson and his 167 all-purpose yards.

McCarron, whose TD pass went to Richardson, did fumble once on the day. Barron converted that turnover into a 96-yard TD, the only time the White team found the end zone in the game.

Fans also got a first look at the early enrollees among next year?s freshman class, notably WR Dee Hart, who took an end-around 17 yards for the deciding TD for the Crimson side.
