One of the last things that seems worthy of concern right now is how the Jerry Sandusky scandal will affect Penn State’s recruiting, but the simple fact is, the football program’s reputation has just taken a major hit, and it remains to be seen just what type of damage this will do to Penn State’s public image for the foreseeable future.
Penn State is a school that has always prided itself on its character and its values, but now that pristine reputation has been tarnished.
Head Coach Joe Paterno, one of the most iconic figures in college football history and the man who has been the face of Penn State for the last four decades, is currently embroiled in a media firestorm and he's faced allegations that he didn’t do enough to stop Sandusky’s reign of terror.
It’s certainly a mess in Happy Valley right now, and one that won’t be easy to clean up.
Right now, we can only speculate what this means for Paterno and the future of Penn State football, but already, one of Penn State’s top recruiting targets has already made his opinion heard.
5-Star DE Noah Spence took to Twitter on Monday to express his feelings.
"Um psu might be a no no for me ewww," he eloquently tweeted.
Spence, who plays for Bishop McDevitt high school in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, is considered one of the elite recruits in this year’s senior class, and while he’s received scholarship offers from nearly every major college in America, his proximity to Penn State was originally believed to be a reason that he could lean towards the Nittany Lions.
Now, though, it sounds as if they’re out of the running, even though Spence’s father Greg said that his son hadn’t crossed Penn State off his list just yet.
Since Spence had never committed to Penn State and there was no guarantee that he was ever coming, it’s hard to say that this is a major blow, but his opinion about the Sandusky situation could be shared by many of his peers.
Penn State has currently received 16 commitments for its 2012 recruiting class, but it remains to be seen if the Lions will be able to hold onto all of those players, and if they’ll be able to add any more.
As it stands now, though, it doesn’t look like they should put a lot of effort into recruiting Noah Spence.
