We all knew that college football would be without Joe Paterno in the very near future.
No one thought he would go out like this.
Ultimately he should be the side story in this Penn State scandal, but the college football world will be much different without him, especially considering how he went out.
So, what can Penn State fans expect the legendary coach to be doing in all of his free time?
Unfortunately for him, it looks like he will have to deal with a lawsuit, either criminal or civil, even though no charges have been filed against him. According to multiple reports, Paterno has hired J. Sedwick Sollers as his personal attorney. Sollers represented former President George H.W. Bush in the Iran-Contra affair.
Information continues to come out about the charges surrounding Jerry Sandusky, so who really knows what Paterno's motivation for hiring Sollers was.
After that, Joe will likely continue to do philanthropic work in and around Penn State. He has already donated millions of dollars to set up a library in his name and his comments immediately following the announcement of his firing would make one believe he will be around State College for a long time to come.
In the wake of everything that has happened, it would not be surprising to see him do work in child abuse programs whether he starts one or donates to an existing cause such as the Heath Evans Foundation.
Another possibility is that if he is absolved of all wrongdoing, Paterno becomes some type of college football analyst in a similar capacity to what Lou Holtz does.
One thing is for certain, though, Joe will not be sitting on the sidelines in his retirement.
