Nick Diaz and Paul Daley came in and gave the fans in San Diego a first round war to be remembered.
With great displays of boxing and stand-up proficiency from both sides, Daley and Diaz wowed the crowd in the welterweight title fight that saw Diaz reign supreme in the end.
It was Diaz's third consecutive title defense.
After weeks upon weeks of speculation that this could be Daley's way back into the UFC or Diaz's way into the UFC, it finally culminated in one night. Both fighters were visibly rocked during the fight, but it was Daley's stumble towards the end that gave Diaz a win after an emotionally charged staredown at the weigh-in on Friday.
Both fighters got in each other's faces verbally taunting each other.
"Yeah, we were fine until we got all hypey at the weigh-in, you know?" said Diaz at the post-fight Strikeforce press conference. "I'm not exactly sure what happened out there."
Diaz ate some nice punches from Daley including a powerful hammerfist that sent shockwaves throughout the stadium.
"I was ok, he just caught me off-balance and I was just watching for him to follow-up," said Diaz. "I'm probably better off down there on my knees anyway, then standing up, caught me off balance like that. If I go down, I go down. What are you going to do down there?"
