Since the season ended, nobody has done so many things right as Christian Ponder. At this stage, the quarterback hierarchy has Blaine Gabbert and Cam Newton fighting for the No. 1 spot then Jake Locker clinging to the No. 3 quarterback spot as Ponder has literally had every single thing go his way this offseason, setting up a quarterback debate that will likely end in his favor.
Jake Locker's 2009 season is getting farther and farther in the rear view mirror and, with the “What have you done for me lately?” mindset instilled in most NFL Scouts, it could be completely irrelevant by Draft Day.
Showed poise and maturity in his interviews at the Combine to go along with an impressive throwing performance, where he outdid Cam Newton, and 4.6 speed. Blaine Gabbert elected not to throw at the Combine, preferring to wait until his Pro Day, and with the meteoric rise that Ponder is having he may actually be trying to regain top two quarterback status by that time.
The argument for Ponder is starting to add up. He had an unimpressive Senior season, but that can easily be spun as “He didn’t want to let his team down so he played in the face of injuries” which displays toughness and a team-first mentality. It was the talk of the Senior Bowl all throughout the practice week, even taking home the MVP.
Ponder also spent his college years running a pro-style offense, which is absolutely crucial for the many teams that need a QB that can step in and play immediately, as opposed to one with a higher ceiling but would take time to develop, such as Locker.
There is even buzz being established that he will be the No.1 overall quarterback, initiated by the National Football Post’s Wes Bunting.
It had been thought that breaking into the “Late first round, early second round” territory would be a momentous achievement.
But as of lately, that would be a momentous failure.
