Matt Hamill has been trying his hardest to convince people that he is more than "just another fighter" in the light heavyweight division, but given his most recent loss to Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 133 it is hard to imagine him being more than that.
Gustafsson is a young, up-and-coming fighter who looks better every time that he fights, and that trend continued last night against Hamill.
But the story of this fight was how Hamill looked and what exactly his future is going to be in mixed martial arts.
Earlier this year, Hamill was riding high after five straight victories - though one of those was a DQ win over Jon Jones in a fight that Jones was dominating - and he wanted to take a big step up in competition.
Hamill decided that the best way to make a name for himself would be to challenge Quinton Jackson, and he got his wish at UFC 130 in a fight that got bumped up to the main event following injuries to Gray Maynard and Frankie Edgar.
But Jackson was clearly a superior fighter and even though Hamill was able to last all three rounds, he did not look impressive at all. Hamill's wrestling was neutralized early on and he had no answer after that.
Then came last night's loss, which can only be described as embarrassing, and now Hamill's future looks very much in doubt.
His spot with UFC is safe, for now, but he needs to show something in his next fight, whenever that might be, otherwise he is going to find himself out of a job.
The Jackson fight was a case of too much too soon for Hamill. But last night's loss was a sign that he is probably not as good or as advanced at this stage of his career as he originally thought himself to be, and Hamill's once bright future looks darker than it ever has.
