Wisconsin Football: Why Russell Wilson Will Win the Heisman Trophy Award

When Russell Wilson went to Wisconsin to play his senior season and finish an interesting college career, we knew there was the potential for something special. The Badgers already had a potent running game and just needed a solid quarterback to help create an unstoppable offense.

Wilson has more than fulfilled expectations at Wisconsin and has them in the running not only for the Big-Ten title, but a National Championship.

Wilson's 74.8 percent completion percentage is the third highest in the country right now only behind Robert Griffin and Bryn Renner.

He is 11th in the country in passing yards with 1,391. His 13 passing touchdowns is 12th in the country. He has the second highest passer efficiency rating at 216.9 and his 12.5 passing yards an attempt is the best in college football.

Did I mention he has two rushing touchdowns, 140 rushing yards and has only thrown one interception?

Wilson has the stats and his team is 5-0 and with a favorable schedule it looks like they have a clear path to go undefeated and become favorites to win the the Big-Ten. Doing that would also make it difficult to keep them out of the National Championship conversation.

Looking at the other candidates, Marcus Lattimore has great rushing numbers but in the last two games combined he has 143 rushing yards and only three touchdowns. We are use to seeing those numbers from him in one game. Wilson has yet to give us a sub-par game, let alone two of them in a row.

You like Kellen Moore? Well Wilson has more passing yards than him and has one more total touchdown. He has also thrown three less interceptions than Moore and has a higher completion percentage.

If these numbers stay that way, the voters will give it to the Big-Ten quarterback and stick it to the little guy in the MWC again.

Until last week Robert Griffin was my Heisman front-runner when he had more touchdowns than incompletions. But his first interception set up a game winning field goal to give Baylor their first loss. The voters were going to look for anything to keep the player from Baylor winning the award and they got it last week.

Some people will criticize Wilson for having a weak schedule and doesn't deserve to win the award putting up great numbers against weak competition. But the same can be said for the player that many consider the favorite in Andrew Luck.

In fact Luck's schedule is weaker than Wilson's is. The Badgers will play five teams that are either ranked or have been ranked at some point during the season. Stanford on the other hand will only play three.

Maybe it's because Luck is the best pro prospect or maybe because he was last years runner up. But the Heisman favorite is located in Madison.

His name is Russell Wilson.
