Since the Philadelphia Eagles acquired cornerbacks Nnamdi Asomugha and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie this offseason, Asante Samuel has been a name thrown around in trade rumors.
But this offseason?s NFL lockout may keep him in Philadelphia.
The Eagles have reportedly been dangling the big-play corner for a first-round pick, but because of the new terms surrounding the contracts of first-rounders, few teams are even entertaining the idea. Teams now have less money tied to rookies per the new collective bargaining agreement, meaning less risk if they flop.
Thus, first-round draft picks are much more valuable now, and you?re going to see fewer teams toss them around for veterans, especially if these teams are near the bottom of the league.
So, while the Eagles don?t necessarily need three talented corners, it?s likely at this point they won?t trade Samuel, despite the back-and-forth banter between the two sides.
If Samuel stays, look for him to line up opposite Asomugha, with Rodgers-Cromartie as the No. 3 option.
And this may actually work out for the better.
If you have three legitimate starters agreeing to share time, you have yourself a very rare situation, and a very deadly one.
In nickel packages, the Eagles are likely going to be hard to beat with Rodgers-Cromartie scanning the field.
As the saying goes, ?You can never have too many cornerbacks.?
Although, given the way the Eagles have gobbled up top players this offseason, their foes this season are probably grumbling, ?But you can sure have too much talent.?
It?s still debatable whether the Eagles will win the Super Bowl this season, but one thing?s for sure: they?re going to be electric and a joy to watch.
