Derrick Rose must make adjustments to win in Game 2
Winning the 2010-11 NBA MVP won?t excuse some of the mistakes that Derrick Rose has made in Game 1, and in the playoffs. While there is no question that Rose has been the engine that powers the Bulls offense, he made mistakes on Monday that ultimately cost the Bulls the game.
Rose started Game 1 going 0-7, while there is no harm in being off your stroke, Rose tended to press at times, especially in the fourth quarter. Meanwhile, Luol Deng, who was an efficient 8-12 with 21 points, didn?t get the ball as often as he should have. Rose, if he intends to lead like an MVP, should be willing to feed the hot hand.
Kyle Korver continued to light it up in the playoffs posting a +17 when he was on the floor, but a -25 when he was off it. This can be attributed to the way that Korver is able to help the Bulls space the floor. Either Korver is a bigger factor than maybe the Bulls realize, but when Rose isn?t aggressive to the rim it often creates a sort of stagnant feel to the Bulls offense.
When Rose attacks it draws his teammates out on the wing for the three point opportunity. So, having Rose penetrate should help the Bulls fix that floor spacing issue with or without Kyle Korver in the game.
Defensively Rose needs to be better. Plain and simple. In Thibodeau?s defensive system the Bulls use Rose to close out on jump shots and attack the ball handler at the top of the key. Derrick Rose seems to be falling behind defenders and biting the fake often. It?s up to him to be the first line of defense and if he?s not creating chaos at the top he weakens the ability for the rest of the Bulls defense to create turnovers and disrupt passing lanes.
Clearly Rose has willing Chicago to enough victories to merit some forgiveness. But Rose must play smart from here on out. If he doesn?t he?ll have a lot of time to think this summer about what could have been.
