Alberto Del Rio: Why His 'Destiny' to Win WWE Title Is Now in Danger

Alberto Del Rio emerged onto the WWE scene in August of 2010. From his personal ring announcer in Ricardo Rodriguez, to a cross arm breaker as his deadly finisher Alberto Del Rio promised us something different and exciting. In my opinion, Del Rio has been just as good as advertised.

His first match on WWE TV would be against the rarely defeated Rey Mysterio. Yet, WWE displayed their confidence in the Mexican Aristocrat, and allowed Del Rio to defeat him.

In the coming months, Del Rio would have the edge during the majority of his feud against Mysterio. In fact, Del Rio won the final encounter between the two, albeit after a dirty finish.

Del Rio would then find himself in a noteworthy feud with Christian. And like Mysterio before him, Christian would quickly be put on the shelf by Del Rio (although this time, Christian's injury was legitimate).

By then, the TLC pay-per-view was just around the corner and Del Rio began proclaiming it was his destiny to become the World Heavyweight Champion.

However, it wasn't meant to be, and "The Rated R-Superstar" Edge retained the World Championship instead.

Despite this, Del Rio was still hellbent on achieving his destiny. To do this, he had to win the Royal Rumble. And that he did.

So by this time, it seemed as if it was carved in stone: At WrestleMania 27, Alberto Del Rio would achieve his destiny and finally win the World Heavyweight Championship.

The problem is, he didn't. Instead of winning the World Heavyweight Championship, Del Rio would begin his downfall.

This downfall ironically began with his rival, Edge, retiring. Because the WWE was obviously set to continue their feud, likely giving Del Rio the title at Extreme Rules. But with the retirement of Edge, the WWE was forced to go in a different direction. They couldn't let a series of unfortunate events lead to Del Rio becoming World Champion. It would just not pass the smell test.

The WWE Draft only solidified this fact. While Christian stayed on Smackdown, Del Rio was sent to Monday Night Raw.

On the surface, the move gave Del Rio a bigger spotlight. But when you take a closer look, this move destroyed his chance to fulfill his destiny.

Why you may ask, well allow me to explain myself.

John Cena is the new WWE Champion. He defeated The Miz on Raw to begin his reign of terror on the WWE's A-Show, perhaps until WrestleMania 28, where he and The Rock have the match that was set a year in advance. At Rocky's birthday, Cena promised to put the belt on the line at WrestleMania.

As we all know, Cena doesn't lie. He always keeps his promises, like his promise to "eliminate The Nexus one by one."

Mix that with Cena's history. Despite me being an outspoken Cena fan, he almost never fails to squash his opponent.

After reigniting his feud with Rey Mysterio, who is also known to squash talent, it's almost assured that Del Rio will face John Cena.

What makes you think Del Rio's destiny will be any different?

So after it appeared to be carved in stone, Alberto Del Rio looks to suffer the fate of many bright, emerging heels before him. Let's just hope that Del Rio will be able to recover, because if not, Del Rio's destiny may not be so bright after all.
